Universal basket retaining spring — 1.2 mm dia., three-point design

Universal retaining spring in 1.2 mm wire with a three-point design, for standard-size portafilters. It seats in the internal groove and keeps the basket in place while you knock out the puck, so it cannot drop into the tray. The heavier 1.2 mm wire gives a firmer grip, useful for baskets in busy service.
It is universal for standard-size portafilters, La Cimbali included. What matters is the wire gauge: measure the old spring and confirm it is 1.2 mm rather than 1.0 mm.
What is the difference between 1.0 mm and 1.2 mm?
The thicker wire presses harder into the groove and holds baskets that have started to work loose. In narrower grooves, though, only the 1.0 mm version will seat.
How is it fitted?
Drop the basket in, compress the spring and seat it in the internal groove of the portafilter with a thin screwdriver. It must sit evenly all the way round, never at an angle.
When should it be replaced?
Whenever the basket comes loose as you knock the puck, when the spring has lost tension, or when it has been sprung out of shape during cleaning.
