What does this spring do in the doser?
Each pull of the lever turns one vane in the doser chamber and releases a portion of coffee into the portafilter. The spring resets the lever for the next pull: without enough tension the strokes are incomplete and doses vary.
What are the signs of a worn spring?
Slow or incomplete lever return, loss of the usual resistance when pulling, and new metallic noises in the mechanism. When the lever stops halfway, the following dose comes out wrong.
How is it replaced?
Unplug the grinder and empty and clean the doser chamber. Open the lid and note, ideally with a photograph, exactly where the two ends of the old spring sit. Fit the new spring in the same position and confirm the lever returns smoothly before closing the lid.
Should I check anything else at the same time?
