What is it made of?
NBR at 85 Shore hardness, to FDA standard for food contact. That is the usual pairing for group gaskets: firm enough not to crush, elastic enough to seal at every lock-in.
How is it replaced?
Hook the old gasket out with a pick or a thin screwdriver, clean the seat and any grounds, then press the new one home all the way round. Lock the portafilter in and let it settle before the first shot.
When is it worth changing?
When the portafilter starts locking much further round, when it drips at the rim during extraction, or when the gasket has gone hard, shiny and grooved. It is a wear part on a regular service cycle.
