What difference does the conical profile make?
The angled face follows the portafilter rim and forces it to centre as it locks in. Sealing happens across the whole cone, which reduces the deep groove that forms at a single point.

NBR at 85 Shore to FDA standard. It stands up to a continuous cycle of hot water and steam and holds its shape under the repeated clamping of the portafilter.
How is it fitted correctly?
Clean the seat and the shower screen first, then place the gasket with the conical face towards the portafilter. Lock and release the portafilter a few times so the gasket beds in before service.
