Boiler level sight glass tube, 12 mm outside diameter and 175 mm long, for Faema E61 machines. The longer tube shows a wider band of the water level than short sight glasses, which makes the reading easier during service. A clouded, scaled or even slightly cracked glass must be replaced, because it works under boiler pressure.

What does a sound sight glass tell you?
Three things at once: the boiler water level, whether the automatic filling system is behaving (a level that is not constantly rising and falling) and how clean the boiler water is. A clouded glass hides all three, and with them any real faults.
How is it replaced safely?
With the machine switched off and the boiler completely cold and depressurised. Undo the nuts at both ends, remove the old glass with its seals, fit the new glass with new seals and tighten the nuts gradually and evenly, so that no load builds on one side.
Why does a new glass cloud over so quickly?
Water hardness. If the sight glass turns white every few months the glass is not the problem: review the water treatment and the descaling schedule, which also protects the boiler and the heating element.
